The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) is an elimination diet that completely eliminates grain and is low in sugar and lactose. It advocates the removal of certain types of carbohydrate-containing foods based on their chemical structure in order to treat various Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Chrons’s, Colitis and various autoimmune diseases such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). It was originally developed by Dr. Sidney Haas, a pediatrician, in the 1920’s as a treatment for Celiac disease.
Recently the scientific community has started to study the diet as a treatment for IBD. The research is still in the early stages, but results show potential benefit to patients.
